Proust Whisky Questionnaire: Nathan DeTienne

Nathan DeTienne is the co-founder of Dram Full, a national online community and regular independent bottler of whisky, as well as co-founder of one of Perth’s premier whisky events Whisky Freedom. The American ex-pat has become a front-and-centre figure of the West Australian whisky scene and regularly seen for a dram and a chat at events all around the country. Whisky Freedom 2020 will take place Saturday 22 February and is on sale now.

Describe your job in five words

Sharing whisky with everyone.

What do you appreciate most in a whisky?

Depth and complexity which will keep me entertained.

What do you appreciate least in a whisky?

Bland or boring whisky.

What is your most treasured whisky?

Too many to count, but if I had to choose one, it would be the Dram Full Cask Release 1 – Highland Park.

What is your favourite virtue in a whisky bar?

A good range with friendly staff who are passionate about the liquid.

What do you most dislike in a whisky bar?

Pretentiousness from the staff.

If you could have any job in whisky, what would it be?

My own! That's why I do what I do!

What is your favourite distillery name?

Caol Ila. I love the way it rolls off the tongue.

Who is your hero in whisky?

My wife, she supports me in my madness!

What is your idea of whisky happiness?

Sharing a couple bottles with a few close friends on a lazy afternoon.

What phrase do you most overuse when talking about whisky?

Smooth, when complaining about people being lazy in describing whisky.

When do you lie about whisky?

Rarely. Maybe if I'm letting someone down easy I will smile and nod in regards to something I know isn't true.

Who or what is the love of your whisky life?

Thao DeTienne, my wife. She's been one hundred percent behind me with all of my whisky dreams.

What is your happiest whisky memory?

Scotland 2015. Card games with my wife, brother and buddy, after a day of exploring distilleries. Drank every bar dry while we played cards.

What is your saddest whisky memory?

Saying goodbye over good whisky at my brother’s wake.

Who do you most admire?

Any distillery owner who started their own distillery. It takes a lot of courage to throw the dice in that way.

Sherry cask or bourbon cask?

Bourbon. I think a good bourbon cask is extremely underrated.

If you could work at one distillery, which one would it be?

Laphroaig would be pretty amazing.

What is your greatest achievement?

Launching Whisky Freedom with my wife, Thao.
