Melbourne’s Starward distillery have launched a limited edition single malt, matured exclusively in ex-tawny casks.
In 2005 single malt was filled into a number of 100 litre fresh and charred tawny casks, sourced from Yalumba and SA Cooperage. It has been described as an “after dinner” or “Christmas” whisky by the producers.
In their own words, “Tastes like all the best bits of Chrissy: plum pudding, fudgy icing, dried fruit and nutmeg.”
Tawny is a fortified wine made in Australia in a similar style to that of Port. The latter can only be called Port if it is produced in Portugal.
The release has been bottled at 48% in 500ml bottles and is retailing at $119 directly from the distillery.
