Starward’s First Bourbon Cask Sells Out In Four Hours

Starward's new-look Projects label

The online allocation of Starward’s first wholly ex-bourbon cask matured whisky has sold out in four hours after being posted today.

With 1,200 bottles in the overall release, the remaining bottles will be sold at their Port Melbourne distillery bar. Having previously been revealed at a family-and-friends event at the distillery, the release had briefly appeared online prior to today’s official release.

The release is the first under Starward’s new-look Projects label, the update of their lauded New World Projects series which has been home to experimental expressions since the distillery’s foundation. This bourbon cask release was offered at $109, continuing the trend of Starward’s limited releases being priced within the spectrum of their core range.

It was matured for four-and-a-half years in ex-Makers Mark and Wild Turkey barrels, bottled at 52% in 500ml.

“Thank you all for coming along on this mission with the Starward team and for supporting what whisky can be,” said the distillery in a statement after the online allocation was exhausted.

One of Australia’s most prolific distilleries, and certainly the keenest priced, Starward’s continued growth has resulted in their first stock pressures in mid-2018. Their original tawny and apera-cask based Solera expression was recently forced into a price increase due to the lack of casks and year-on-year excise increases and now sits at around $129. The Wine Cask expression, which averages around $100, has become the Victorian distillery’s core and is also going through a period of supply strain. Whisky Ardent understands regular supply should resume in the latter months of 2018.

Distillery founder David Vitale said of the release, “The nose is full of bright tropical fruits; toasted pineapple, green bananas, caramel and honeydew melon with undertones of lemongrass. The palate is sweet and buttery, filled with caramel biscuity notes, leading you back to tropical fruit familiarity with a touch of vanilla coconut and honey to round it off.”

Starward’s Projects is expected to feature the next release in the cult ginger beer cask series before the end of the year.
